  • We are loving...our KeepCups in All Blog Posts, We are loving....
    15 Apr 2012

Every now and then someone is clever enough to invent something that you can't believe no-one else thought of before. The KeepCup is one of those things for us.

Yes, we are loving our KeepCups.

These nifty little cups come along with us to all our markets and events and they never let us down.We miss them terribly if we forget to pack them up into our kit.

They are a little bit of comfort in sometimes unfamiliar environments. And while looking so gorgeous on our table, they also save us from throwing away a sleeve of disposable cups.

You can visit their web page here (http://www.keepcup.com.au/) and even design your own KeepCup. Lovely.

  • Wearing Six....to dinner in Wearing Six, All Blog Posts, Our Products
    29 Mar 2012

This is a very quick post - running out to dinner with friends in 10 minutes.

I decided to wear my beautiful silk Stephanie Vandaros top. Check her out here - we found her at Mosman Markets and her designs are lovely. This top can be worn in a variety of ways and it feel gorgeous on.

But I felt like wearing something new from Six in a Row.

We have been working with a new design, which has been selling out at each event we have taken it to. It is a very long necklace made with our little "seed" beads in a range of delicious colour combinations. I made this charcoal and navy one to come out to dinner with me tonight. We haven't posted any photos of it until now, so we hope you like it.

    Bon appetit!

  • Wearing Six @ Canberra Handmade Market in March in Markets and Events, Wearing Six, All Blog Posts, Our Products
    22 Mar 2012

A little twist on our "Wearing Six" posts.

At our markets we like to change our beads through out the day to show our necklaces, bracelets and bangles in action. It is a little bit like channelling Diana Ross in concert, with more "wardrobe" changes than is completely necessary.

Here a series of photos we took at the recent Canberra Handmade Market in March.

We'll be back in Canberra for the Handmade Market on 9 and 10 June.

  • The Holy Family Art & Craft Show in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts
    12 Mar 2012

It is easy for us to remember our anniversay - it coincides with the Holy Family Art & Craft Show. And we can't believe it is three years since we tentatively launched Six in a Row, hoping that they would like our creations.

Due to the amazing responce we got from the Holy Family and Lindfield community, we have kept going. We have loved growing Six from that very first day - it really is like our sixth child. We also shudder when we think about how many pieces of jewellery our hands have made since then!

This year the Holy Family Arts & Crafts Show will be held this weekend. Details for this fantastic fete are:

    Date - Saturday 17 March
    Time - 9.30am to 4.30pm
Where - Holy Family School. Cnr Pacific Hwy & Highfield Rd, Lindfield

If you're in the area, and in the market for a fun day out, we would love to see you.

We will also have a range of new styles and colours for our loyal customers.

  • Wearing Six in a Row last week - 3 March 2012 in Wearing Six, All Blog Posts
    4 Mar 2012

Last week I remembered to take a few photographs of how we have been wearing our Six in a Row pieces.

There is aabsolutely no need to even say it, but just in case you thought we might have tickets on ourselves, we know we are not models. Despite this great disappointment(!), we like the idea of showing you what we are making and how we are wearing our Six pieces.

The intention is to pop up regular posts like this one - we hope it gives you some ideas.

    Wednesday
Wearing two wooden necklaces at once. They were lovely to wear and we must make some more for the beautiful Canberra Handmade Market next weekend @ the National Convention Centre. We've sold out of stock!

    Thursday
Our cloud pebble is a new addition to the Six in a Row family and it has proved to be so very versatile. It really does seem to go with almost everything.

    Friday
The weather has been miserable and I had to pull out a warm top. Loved wearing a long navy opera length necklace with the navy knit.

    Saturday
Felt like something pretty today, so I went for a combination of 3 "Seed" bead necklaces in white, cream and clear.

  • We are loving....our gumboots in All Blog Posts, We are loving....
    3 Mar 2012

We've been thinking that we have had about enough of the bad news we read and hear everyday.

We can't stop it, but to redress the balance a little we thought we might start a blog thread about things that we are loving.

We will occasionally write about something beautiful we've seen or photographed, something delicious we've eaten or cooked, something we are using (or wishing we were using) that makes us smile, or something interesting we've read. Hopefully if you stumble across these blog posts from time to time, they might just add a little bit of positive to your day.

Today's first "We are loving..." post is brought to you by our trusty gumboots.

Not very glamorous, but our gumboots have been a necessity when we've had outdoor markets on soggy days.

Over the last couple of days we have had an extraordinary amount of rain and we have been so happy that we have those dependable gumboots to pull out of the wardrobe. They are brilliant and all our other shoes thank them for taking the pressure off them.

To all our friends in the country or effected by flooding rivers, we know gumboots are not enough, but we are hoping you are all OK, and staying safe and dry.

  • Is there such a thing as too much cream? in All Blog Posts, Our Products
    10 Oct 2011

We would say you can never have too much cream on a warm scone, and we would also say you can never have too much cream in your bead collection.

It is the perfect colour to go with almost everything in a wardrobe.

But I must admit, I was a little shocked by just how many cream necklaces have found their way into my personal collection. And the sign that I may really have a problem is that I can't see that this is a problem!

Lucky for our customers, we have a rainbow of colours we love too. Just wait until you see the new colours we are going to be working with. A post will follow soon.

  • Holiday Craft in All Blog Posts, Ideas, inspiration and interest
    28 Sep 2011

It's a rainy day during the school holidays here. And it is proving difficult to get much beading done.

Instead, a perfect activity to fill some time has been to help my daughter make a lovely owl hand/finger puppet project. This kit is really beautiful and answers the "teach me to sew mummy" cry perfectly.

If you wanted to buy them, they are called "Alice Melvin's Cut Out and Sew Glove Puppets" and I have tracked them down on Big Cartel, but Alice Melvin's on a maternity break until November, if you can wait! Click here to see the site.

And now these beautiful owls are made, the fun continues as my daughter writes a play for the puppets to star in.

  • Cream and crafty crochet in Wearing Six, All Blog Posts, Our Products
    20 Jul 2011

It is a miserable day in Sydney today. Rain and wind and a strong desire to stay inside with a pot of tea and caramel slice.

To help ward off the cold I reached for a beautiful soft jumper my sister "reinvented" with some very fine and beautiful crochet work. It is soft and warm and I didn't want today's beads to steal the show. So I added a collection of three of Six in a Row's cream "seed"  necklaces to go with it.

If you can, stay warm. And don't forget the caramel slice.

Quietness on the blog front has not meant quietness for Six in a Row.

Although we haven't had many "public" events lately, we have been been very busy taking part in a range of charity and fundraising events.

We love this side of Six - it gives us the opportunity to help, in our own small way, to help raise funds for great causes.

Please don't think we are the super women who organise these things. We take our hats off to those clever, caring, motivated women who organise these events. You are all inspirational. Thank you for asking us to be a part of them.

  • Still loving grey and white in Wearing Six, All Blog Posts
    16 Apr 2011

We haven't posted a "Wearing Six" entry for a while....which is silly considering we wear Six in a Row pieces every day.

I have been loving wearing grey and white over summer, often reaching for our white pebble style necklace to wear with a grey t-shirt. The love affair hasn't faded with the arrival of Autumn in Australia.

Yesterday I tweaked the look a little with three necklaces made of our small beads in white, cloud and cream, worn casually with a grey t-shirt and jeans.

This combinationhas proved to be very versatile and I find myself reaching for them on the days when I can't decide what to wear - they seem to go with almost everything.

    16 Mar 2011

The Holy Family Art Show is an important event for Six in a Row. It marks our anniversary. Two years ago we tentatively tested our designs on The Holy Family school and wider community. We will always hold it close to our hearts as they took to our creations and gave Six in a Row flight.

And so we prepare for the 2011 Holy Family Art Festival with new colours and styles, including the following:

    • new children's "Bright" range in softer autumn colours
    • a brand new colour collection of little girl bangles. The range we had at the last Festival sold out so we hope we have enough on Saturday!
    • new children's range with porcelain owl and heart details
    • women's "Bright" range in softer autumn colours, including a wide range of colours in our bracelets
    • women's brooches handmade from Italian silk and linen
    • soft, matte resin beads in rose, cream and arctic blue necklaces and a new collection of pebble style bracelets.

As always, we hand make and finish all our pieces.

  • Introducing new autumn colour - children's range in All Blog Posts, Our Products, Six Stockists
    14 Mar 2011

The promise of autumn and winter has brought new colour inspiration. We are adding a more subtle palette into both our children's and women's "Brights" range. Think dove grey, plum, peach, and blush pink beads.

We are detailing the children's necklaces ($16) and bracelets ($8) with rich velvet ribbons that remind us of party dresses when we were 6year old.

In addition to these softer colours, our signature bright colours remain, and we have added some completely delicious new colours to this box of tricks.

You can find these lovely new beads at:

    - Buddy Babe in Haberfield, NSW
    - Shop Handmade Canberra, ACT - from next week
    - The Holy Family Art Festival - 19 March. Corner of Highfield Road and the Pacific Hwy, Lindfield, NSW; or
    - by clicking her to drop us a message and ordering.

Now, off to make some necklaces for Shop Handmade......

    23 Feb 2011

We have been doing lots of experimenting with our knotting of beads and have come up with beautiful and interesting pieces.

This photo shows a lovely cluster of cream beads with ice blue and coral accents. We have strung these bundles on cord with a double sliding knot so you can adjust the height of the bead cluster to the perfect spot to suit you.

These new pieces had their first outing at Handmade Market Canberra in February and proved to be so popular that we will be making more in a range of colours and combinations.

Last Saturday the Market move house to the National Convention Centre. And the new location gets a huge stamp of approval from us.

We loved that parking was plentiful for visitors to the market. We loved that the Shop Handmade Canberra (which stocks Six in a Row) was just a hop, skip and a jump away. We loved that the morning rain was of no concern to us, or the heat later in the day, or the wind that picked up.

The large space filled with atmosphere as each stall went up and the visitors poured in. Natural light flooded in from the wall of windows down one side and the place literally buzzed.

It was also a great success for Six in  Row with, at times, a line of lovely shoppers waiting to come into our stall. Once again, the Canberra crowd were warm and generous and a complete pleasure to talk to. For anyone who puts their heart into what they make and do, it is wonderful to get this sort of response. Thank you.

We like our stall to look beautiful, and on Saturday tried to create a bit of a boutique feel in honour of the new location. We also thought we would try to bring a bit of what we loved about the old location with us, in the form of the trees on our fabric drops. We've posted a before and after picture of how we looked on Saturday.

The icing on the cake was our market neighbours for the day:  Louise from Mrs Sew & So's and Sarah from Gifts Created - both inspired, clever, creative women with very beautiful products for sale. Our photos don't do them justice, but please visit their websites for more information and images. Amongst her treasures, Mrs Sew & So does a great line of personalised towels, which make a perfect gift. And check out the felt moustaches and mouths from Gifts Created. They are inspired.

The next Handmade Market Canberra will be held on the June long weekend - Saturday 11 June. If you're from Canberra, don't leave town! And if you're from out of town, think about planning a long weekend in Canberra and come and visit.

  • Handmade Market Canberra - Saturday 19 February in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts
    15 Feb 2011

This Saturday the beautiful Handmade Market Canberra will be moving to it's new home at the National Convention Centre in Canberra. (Click here for more information.)

And we are busy beading and threading and stitching in preparation.

This will be our first market for 2011 and to be honest I think we have some butterflies. It is a bit like getting ready to go back to school, but without the packed lunch and the new shoes....although I wouldn't mind a new pair of shoes....

We are really looking forward to the new location and congratulate the Handmade Market organisers for finding a great, central location that offers abundant parking and space and a cash machine only 100m away! They also deserve congratulations for growing Handmade so big and beautiful, so quickly, and providing all these arty & crafty types with an outlet.

We've run our eye over the list of clever designers and it is inspiring.

If you are in Canberra over the weekend, we'd love it if you popped in to say hello.

  • Hello February - where did January go? in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts
    3 Feb 2011

After a lovely break Six in a Row is back in the swing of things with lots of plans for the coming year.

The crazy busy-ness in the lead up to Christmas left no room to experiment and daydream. But the relative calm and quiet of January provided the room we needed to get the creative ideas flowing again. We have sketch books brimming with designs and some prototype pieces in the works. We can't wait to bring them to you in 2011.

We apologise if you were planning to visit us at Mosman Market this weekend, but we will not be there this Saturday. Please drop us a line if you have any queries.

Our next market will be at Canberra Handmade  Market on Saturday 19 February. And the exciting news here is that they are moving to a new home - The National Convention Centre. It will be all undercover so heatwaves, rain or freezing conditions will no longer be a threat to the enjoyment of the day. And there will be plenty of parking. The details are:

    Date - Saturday 19 February
    Time -  11.00am to 4.00pm
Location - National Convention Centre, 31 Constitution Avenue, Canberra.

  • Merry Christmas in About Six, All Blog Posts, Six Stockists
    22 Dec 2010

There has been a flurry of activity for Six in a Row in the lead up to Christmas.

And as we pause to draw breathe, we want to thank all our beautiful customers and supporters. We have loved designing and making jewellery for you and your friends and your families and your school and your shops.

Thank you to all our customers through out the year. We have loved creating for you and the generous feedback you provide has given us so much energy and inspiration.

We also know many Six gifts have been carefully chosen to place under your Christmas tree or into stockings. We hope that these gifts are loved and worn and that people think of you when they wear their piece.

We would also like to thank the shops that have been with us while we have tentatively put our retail toes into the water - The National Portrait Gallery Store, Shop Handmade and Buddy Babe, thank you for taking our products - we are so pleased that they have been so warmly received.

We will be taking a short break until 10 January to rest our beading fingers, but will be back next year with beautiful new designs and ideas for 2011. We can't wait to show them to you.

Until then, we trust you have a happy Christmas and we are looking forward to seeing you next year.

  • Sinterklaas in All Blog Posts, Ideas, inspiration and interest
    6 Dec 2010

Half of Six in a Row is half Dutch. The surname is a bit of a giveaway.

Sinterklaas is a traditional winter holiday figure in the Netherlands, celebrated annually on the eve of the name day of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of Amsterdam, children and sailors (5 December).

The Dutch tradition, as my family know it at least (i.e. might have been lost in translation on the other side of the world), is for children to put their shoes at the fireplace or outside the door when they go to bed. In their shoes they place carrots, apples, straw or sugar for Sinterklaas' grey horse Amerigo.  And while the children sleep Sintaklaas comes by and the carrots are replace with a chocolate letter.

We are a little light on fireplaces at our house and where we live possums are more than likely to eat the carrots, apples and chocolate if left outside. We leant that the hard way one Easter when the Easter bunny hid our eggs in the garden but the possums found them first.

So yesterday our Weetabix were replaced with chocolate...and I would like to have got a few other photos of the beautiful chocolate letters but they didn't last long enough.

  • Thank you Mosman and Canberra in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts
    5 Dec 2010

We would like to thank everyone who helped make both Mosman Market and Canberra Handmade Market such great days for us yesterday.

Mosman has been a rain magnet all year, and yesterday was no different. But once the rain passed we were rewarded with gorgeous weather and lovely people shopping.

Canberra Handmade worked the other way round, with the rain holding off until the very end. And once again we had a wonderful day. We really do love coming to Handmade. We think it is a bit of a superstar of a market.

In addition to thanking all our customers (especially all the repeat buyers - your feedback is gold), we want to thank our beautiful family and friends who worked with us yesterday. We hope you had as much fun as we did and thank you, thank you, thank you for all your support.

With that monster Saturday behind us, we now look forward to our final market of 2010, the Mosman Twilight Market on Thursday 16 December from 4.30pm to 9.30pm.

  • Buddy Babe Kidswear - Haberfield in All Blog Posts, Six Stockists
    23 Nov 2010

We were thrilled when the lovely Lilian from Buddy Babe Kidswear in Haberfield took a selection of Six in a Row children's pieces on Friday to sell in her beautiful store.

If you're not from the area, Buddy Babe is a gorgeous shop stocked with a superb range of kids clothes  and  gifts. Lilian gets the balance right between what children love to wear and what parents want their children to wear. I can never seem to leave the store without something for someone - a birthday gift, something for the gift box, a party dress for the next season, cool t-shirts. And I often wish her girls clothes came in grown up sizes for me.

The exciting post script for us is that Lilian called on Monday asking for more pieces for the shop because lots of people had snapped up the ones she'd taken 3 days before.

  • Two More Markets - 11 & 12 November and 14 November 2010 in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts
    8 Nov 2010

After the disappointing rain cancellation last weekend at Mosman Market, we can't wait for the two markets we have this week. And the great news is that we will have a full and beautiful range of stock on display.

Our first market is the Holy Family Christmas Market.
    Details are:
    Date and Time
    Thursday 11 November - 6pm to 9pm; and
    Friday 12 November - 9am to Midday and then 2pm to 5pm

Location - Holy Family Catholic Primary School. 2-4 Highfield Road, Lindfield, NSW. You will find us in the newly extended school hall, come rain or shine!

This market and school is close to our hearts as we launched Six in a Row at the Holy Family School Fete in 2009. And we are really looking forward to showing some of our new beads.

Our second outing will be at the Croydon Public School Christmas Market. We sometimes get approached at markets to attend other markets. And that is how we find ourselves attending the Croydon Christmas Market for the first time. We love that we will also be showing our full collection in Sydney's inner west for the first time. Details are:

    Date - Sunday 14 November
    Time - 10am to 4pm
Location - Croydon Public School, Young Street, Croydon, NSW

We will have our fingers and toes crossed for good weather.

If you're in the area of either of these markets, we would love to see you.

  • Big Weekend Ahead - Balmain Arts & Crafts and Mosman Market in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts
    2 Nov 2010

With a slight of hand and a few mirrors, Six in a Row will be in two places at once this weekend:

    Balmain Arts and Crafts Fair
    Date - Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th November
    Location - Eaton Street, Balmain

    and

    Mosman Market
    Date - Saturday 6 November, 8.00am to 3.00pm
Location - Village Green, Split Junction, Mosman.

Actually, there is no magic involved.

Emma and Zanny will be (wo)manning their stall at Mosman on Saturday. We will have our complete range, including some of the beautiful new styles we have been creating. (The photos accompanying this post are of some of our new styles and colours, snapped at St Thomas last weekend.)

And the wonderful organisters of  the Balmain Arts & Crafts Fair will be setting up a beautiful "boutique" of goods at the Father John Therry Primary School, which will include Six in a Row pieces. If you're in the area pop by and have a look - last year the quality and range of goods on sale was incredibly impressive.

  • St Thomas Art & Craft Show - 30 and 31 October in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts
    27 Oct 2010

We will have a few blog posts over the next few weeks with information about our upcoming markets. And our new beads have come just in time for us to add some beautiful new pieces to our collection.

We have been busy working with our new beads and these photos give you an idea of some of the peices we have been busy making.

This weekend we have the St Thomas Arts & Crafts Show. It runs over the whole weekend in Willoughby, Sydney and if last year's event is anything to go by, this will be another great weekend.

Last year we were so impressed by the quality of the event and the professional organisation of the show.

Keep in mind that most of the school markets that we are invited to are run by parents of children at the school....parents who already have busy lives and jobs and children and many other responsibilities. We always come away with great admiration for these volunteers who work so hard to raise funds for their children's school.

The parents of St Thomas have it down to a fine art and the result is a show of high quality arts and crafts, really fun attractions for the children, and great food. Last year we even managed to do some of our own Christmas shopping.

We are really looking forward to this weekend. Details are:

Date - Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October
Time - Saturday from 9.00am to 5.00pm and Sunday from 9.00am to 4.00pm
Location- St Thomas Parish Hall, Cnr High Street and Horsley Avenue, Willoughby
We will be inside in the Parish Hall, come rain or shine.

If you are in the area, we'd love to see you.

  • A Treasure Trove of Loveliness - our new beads have arrived!!!!!!! in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts, Ideas, inspiration and interest
    22 Oct 2010

Our latest shipment of beads has just arrived, and they are totally, utterly and completely gorgeous.

It wasn't as though we were lacking any inspiration before, but now we are awash with ideas. We are not drowning, but waving and we know there won't be enough hours in the day to create all the ideas we have flowing in our heads.

This stage of the creative process is wonderful - we are inspired and excited but it is also a little overwhelming and all consuming.

The beads really are lovely. We have kept many of the colours and shapes that are like good friends to us now, but we have also added some delicious colours and beautiful shapes to keep life interesting for both you and us.

And these beads have come just in time for us to create a range of beautiful new designs for the events we have in the next few weeks:

    1. St Thomas Art & Craft Show, Willoughby - Saturday 30 & Sunday 31 October
    2. Balmain Art & Craft Show, Balmain - Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 November
    3. Mosman Markets, Mosman - Saturday 6 November
    4. Holy Family Christmas Market, Lindfield - Thursday 11 & Friday 12 November
    5. Croydon Christmas Market , Croydon - Sunday 14 November

We will post more details closer to each event but if you're thinking of Christmas shopping, these markets each promise to have a great range of potential Christmas gifts, hopefully a little different to the usual department store fare. If you'd like to register for e-updates about upcoming events, please click here.

Anyway, enough typing, we need to get beading. Apologies in advance to our friends and family if you don't hear from us for a few weeks!

  • Beautiful New Cord Has Arrived in All Blog Posts, Ideas, inspiration and interest
    15 Oct 2010

The delivery of a brown paper parcel is always exciting. Maybe it is because of Julie Andrews singing "These Are a Few of My Favourite Things" in The Sound of Music.

Anyway, yesterday brought a brown paper parcel with our latest order of cord.

We have searched far and wide for a reliable supply of superb quality cord in gorgeous colours for us to work with. These spools didn't disappoint. I couldn't wait to sit down and start working with them. The new green cord works beautifully with our retro green beads.

And we have big plans for the navy and lilac. Watch this space.

  • A Mosman Market Find in Wearing Six, All Blog Posts
    13 Oct 2010

At the last Mosman Market we found a stall selling lovely cotton tops and scarves, not far from our stall (I wish I had her card so I could tell you the name....we will update this post when we have her details). Perfect for summer. Love them and bought one, which I'm wearing today, with three strands of icy blue beads. These beads go with so many colours (see them with watermelon red here), but today feel very fresh and summery on pretty white.

  • Black Choker in Wearing Six, All Blog Posts, Our Products
    8 Oct 2010

We just made a piece for a client (that sounds a bit too formal - actually Zan's brother's partner!). The brief was "simple choker style and black".

I have to admit that I had a creative hurdle to leap before I could sit down and play with the beads to make it. Chokers are not a style either of us have worn....but after this, that may have changed. This style works particularly well if you prefer to wear a higher neckline.

I channeled my inner Queen Victoria and I ended up making three versions for her to choose from. Although they may look similar, each is a little different - different stringing material, bead size, length etc.

And the feed back is she loves them all and they have all been packed for a trip to Europe. We wish we were with them.

  • Vaucluse House in All Blog Posts, Ideas, inspiration and interest
    5 Oct 2010

Emma used to work for the Historic House Trust (HHT) when she first left university and Zanny has a soft spot for their properties, trying to visit one each school holidays.

I recently took my daughter to the fantastic "Kids in the (Colonial) Kitchen" (click here for more information), where the children toured Vaucluse House's vegetable garden and then, in the actual kitchen of Vaucluse House, made damper, churned butter and mixed homemade lemonade. All of which they then devoured for afternoon tea. An inspired program which really brought history to life. The look on my daughter and her friend's faces when told of the life of the 12 year old scullery maid was worth the price of admission alone!

While the children were building muscles turning cream into butter, I toured the house again. I don't think I will ever bore of this. But the sight in the Drawing Room took my breath away. Beautifully arranged on a table in the centre of this grand room was a rainbow of the most gorgeous resin art works. To put sugar on top, Janet Tavener, the artist/creator of these delights, was standing there too.

Janet Tavener is a photographer and talented resin artist. In colabortion with the HHT, and to coincide with the Sydney International Food Festival, Janet has created a these delicious pieces. To quote the HHT magazine "...Janet Tavener brings together two aspects of Vaucluse House - the intriguing heirloom fruit and vegetable varieteies still grown in its kitchen garden today and the property's rich collection of copper jelly moulds."  The exhibition is called "Out of the Mould" . Click here for more information from the HHT.

They are completely beautiful and my photos do not do them justice.

  • Playing Dress-Ups at Mosman in Markets and Events, Wearing Six, All Blog Posts
    3 Oct 2010

In between designing and making all our pieces, and doing a range of school/charity events and fetes, we have made sure that we have two regular markets for our customers to find us - the quarterly Canberra Handmade (www.canberrahandmade.com.au) and our Mosman Market spot on the Village Green in Mosman, on the first Saturday of each month.

At each market we have fun changing the beads we are wearing as the mood takes us. When we do this we often find that the beads are sold from around our necks. So yesterday we tried to take a few snaps of what we wore. It might bring some of our pieces to life and give an idea of how we wear them.

The photo gallery would be longer, but unfortunately rain blew back in and we all had to pack up early before we were washed away.

  • Sneaky sausage rolls in All Blog Posts, Food
    29 Sep 2010

OK. We know we are not in the business of food blogging. But if you know either of us, you know we love good food and cooking for our friends and family. Having said that, not all members of our respective families are good eaters.

Recently Emma shared a sneaky sausage roll recipe with me and as I write this the results are being devoured by my children. If you also have beautiful children who have never met a vegetable they like, give this a try. And please don't let the children thing put you off, they are delicious for adults too (as I wipe pastry crumbs from my lips).

Obviously this has not been tested in the Women''s Weekly kitchen but we do hope it works for you.

    Ingredients
    Splash of olive oil
    1/2 onion, finely diced
Clove of garlic, chopped or crushed
1 or 2 carrots, peeled and finely grated (the finer the better - much sneakier)
1 apple, peeled and finely grated
(Note - you can add any kind of vegetable you think would work, celery, zucchini, capsicum...just grate it finely. The apple adds a lovely natural sweetness so we recommend you keep this in.)
    500g beef mince
    2 eggs
    Salt and pepper to taste
2 sheets of shop bought puff pastry (yes, yes, we know. We'd never win MasterChef or Come Dine with Me)

Heat oven (200C for fan forced ovens, 220C otherwise)
On a medium heat, brown onion in a little olive oil
Add grated carrot, apple and chopped garlic and brown with onion
While this is browing, in a mixing bowl mix 1 beaten egg into the beef mince
Add the onion, carrot and apple mixture into beef and mix together
Cut defrosted puff pastry into halves length ways and lay a long sausage shape of the mixture along one edge of each piece of pastry
Beat 2nd egg in a small bowl and the paint a strip down the other side of each pastry sheet. This will act as the glue to seal the sausage rolls
Roll the pastry and meat into a sausage roll shape and cut each roll into desired length
Put rolls onto a baking try and paint each piece with the egg wash to get that lovely golden brown finish on the pastry
Bake in oven for 20 minutes

We hope you enjoy them. And we can't promise that this will be the last food entry in our blog.

  • Thank you PLC - Summer Colours in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts, Our Products
    22 Sep 2010

We had a lovely day at the PLC Garden Party last Saturday. Spring was in the air.

This was our second time at the PLC Garden Party and we were quite busy. Although we tried to thank people on the day, we wanted to thank the repeat customers who gave us some gorgeous feedback, and the patient people who waited when we were rushed and couldn't get to them quickly

We love setting up our stall at each market and try to improve it each time. On Saturday Emma had a bit of fun styling our mannequins with some colour for summer. These small bead necklaces have proved very popular and are easy to wear.

We are grateful to have a market free weekend this weekend. A bit of time to recharge and restock, ready for Mosman Market on Saturday 2 October.

  • The Morning After the Day Before - Handmade Market Canberra in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts
    12 Sep 2010

We are home from another fantastic Canberra Handmade Market (www.handmademarket.com.au).

We had a great time again and were so busy that we didn't get the chance to even eat our delicious red velvet cupcakes until the market was over. We had also planned to start our own Christmas shopping at the beautiful stalls.

A big thank you to Celia for getting some lunch for us - we may have fainted without you!

Apart from some gusty (and gutsy) winds in the afternoon, where we felt like Mary Poppins while holding on to our tent, the day was gorgeous - sunshine, happy shoppers, many repeat customers and meeting people we have only done business with over the internet (thank you for popping by to say hello).

We were in our usual place under the trees, near two stalls that have become our neighbours in Canberra. And we are lucky to have them as our neighbours.

The first stall holders we met at Handmade were the great couple from Rancho. Click here to visit their online store. They make and sell great prints and beautiful jewellery, all based on the artwork of Michelle. She and her husband are a super team and we love being on the same market "avenue" as them. They are going to be run off their feet at the next Handmade Market, so close to Christmas. Look out for them if you are there.

Not only isJodie from  Allana C a very sweet woman (thank you for helping clean me up when I fell over yesterday!) she makes the loveliest soft toys. Click here to visit her Etsy site. They are really beautiful and whimsical and soft and cuddly. She also makes tea towels, belts, peg bags, dog leads and camera straps. We love being beside her stall so we can look at the beautiful fabrics and colours she works with. She has a wonderful eye for colour and pattern. Her tea towels make great thank you gifts and her soft toys are the perfect gift for a new baby.

Looking forward the next Handmade Market on Saturday 4 December already.

    Thank you Canberra.

  • Canberra in Bloom - Handmade Market in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts
    9 Sep 2010

We are off to Canberra this weekend for the next Handmade Market (http://www.handmademarket.com.au/home.html). It will be our third trip to Canberra for this market and we really love being a part of it.

A real buzz is developing around this market, and the whole idea of real handmade wares.

As you may know, every Six in a Row piece is made by hand. And at this market we are in excellent company as each stall is a showcase of other crafts people's creations and ideas.

The range of goods is inspiring. So many creative and talented people. I started to list the types of things that are on offer....and the list was ridiculously long. Instead, click on  the following link to get an idea of the types of stalls at the market http://www.handmademarket.com.au/Designers.html.

If you are in Canberra on the weekend, please pop by and have a look around. And say hello to us if you find us - we are hoping we will be in our usual place outside under the trees.

  • Big big news for Six in All Blog Posts, Six Stockists
    5 Sep 2010

This is big news for Six in a Row. News we are very excited about.

We recently met with the gallery store at the National Portrait Gallery (www.portrait.gov.au) in Canberra.

If you know the National Portrait Gallery, you will know the Portrait Gallery Store  (www.portraitgallerystore.com.au). The Store is great and has a reputation for stocking a thoughtful and beautiful range of books, gifts and jewellery.

This was Six's first conversation with a retail outlet and we are thrilled to report that they have taken a capsule collection of necklaces from our pebble, crystal cut, icy blue and retro green women's ranges, and some gorgeously bright pieces from our children's range.

    Thank you Richard!

Right now we should be standing on the Village Green in Mosman with all our beautiful necklaces catching the sun. But today the weather had other ideas.

It never looked good, but ever the optimists, we loaded up the cars and drove to Mosman. Instead of finding the buzz of stallholders unloading cars and setting up shop, we found huddles of people, waiting.

And as the rain fell and the wind blew, the Council decided that the conditions were bad and so the September Mosman Market was cancelled.

We apologise to the people who had planned to come today, but we will be back there again next month (Saturday 2 October).

So now I am tucked up at home with Brasseries Bread chocolate and almond croissants, the only brave stallholder to laugh at the rain and set up shop. Not a bad consolation prize really.

After celebrating the arrival of Spring yesterday, today dawned grey and wet. I feel a little silly. Anyway, I'm wrapped up in autumn colours. And loving the scarf I was given for my birthday. It goes beautifully with my warm red amber style beads.

We meet some great people while working on Six in a Row. Some people are just naturally warm and generous.

At a recent event we met Nicky and Cassandra from RaspberryRose (www.raspberryrose.com.au). These two friends source gorgeous and unique gifts and accessories from both Australia and globally that you just won't find at your usual shopping haunts.

We obviously love resin and RaspberryRose have gorgeous little resin bowls and spoons in really yummy colours - perfect gifts. They also have a great eye for colour and pattern which shows in their collection of aprons, water bottles, key rings and wallets.

It's a great site to visit for a bit of gift shopping.

It is the day before the beginning of spring and Sydney turned on some beautiful weather. To celebrate the promise of long, warm days I wore our icy artic blue beads with a watermelon coloured dress.

We are very happy to announce that Six in a Row are now creating earrings.

The earrings are designed to compliment our necklaces and bracelets and come in a wide range of colours - gelato pastels, creams, crystal clears, turquoise, red, white, icy blues and "vintage" green. And we only use sterling silver findings in our earrings.

I snapped these photos at a market over the weekend - not the same high standards of the beautiful professional photos on our webpage by Mel Birt (www.melaniebirtphotography.com.au ), but they hopefully give you an idea of how they look!

We often get together around our boardroom table (read dining room table) to discuss very important Six in a Row things that will change the world, like beads and cord and orders and lovely things we want to make.

At a recent meeting during the school holidays we couldn't help but notice the colour similarities between some of our children's necklaces and the gingerbread men the children were enjoying.

Inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere.

We both wear beads almost every day. I think it makes us happy. I also think we don't feel completely dressed without them.

So we thought we might occassionally post pictures of how we wear our Six in a Row jewellery.

Today I was feeling like doing a twist on the twin set and pearl look and have layered up some creamy resin beads with a cream wrap cardigan.

The cream beads are feminine and beautiful and they are very easy to wear because they work with so much in our wardrobes.

A visit to Susannah Place at the Rocks in Sydney was both interesting and moving. And inspiration found in the shape of some beautiful beads dug from the foundations of early Sydney. Blues, pinks and a touch of green. Also loved the lost button collection and the broken fragments of blue and white porcerlain. Everyday treasures.

One half of Six in a Row has just spent a few days on a farm on the South Coast of New South Wales.

Sometimes it can be hard to find a reason to wear beads on a rural property but my loyal honey/caramel amber necklace earned it's place in my wardrobe once again. It was just right for the setting.

The smaller girls didn't have any problems accessorising - apparently beads can be worn picking lavender, collecting eggs, spotting wombats, horse riding and building cubby houses.

I took my beading kit and a lot of delicious beads with me with the noble intention of making many pieces in the fresh country air......I made a grand total of two pieces. But we are back home now and there will be no excuses for not getting busy again.

  • Mosman in July in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts

A very chilly and early start to the day at Mosman on Saturday. And a little windy too. We normally display our necklaces on a small forest of trees, but today the gusty wind scared us enough to lay our jewellery on the table. We missed the trees dripping in lovely resin jewellery.

With each market we do, we have been forming the opinion that the brother/sisterhood of market stallholders is strong. Each market has it's own feel and often there is a camaraderie between stall holders. Once again we met many kind and generous people. Today we were placed  near some delicious chutneys and jams (took home several jars between us), beautiful photographs, very lovely children's clothes and great bread that gave Zanny's dad's a run for its money. A big favourite for us was a lovely woman selling pots and galvanised tubs and buckets of herbs. A perfect house warming present.

The market itself had a good feel to it. We didn't get to explore it properly (one of the problems of being a stallholder!) but loved chatting to shoppers. Thank you Mosman.

We could easily sit back and warm our hands on the glow of that feeling but we don't have time - we have to get busy making more jewellery for you.

Before we do, we thought we should respond to the excellent questions we have received.

    2. Do you ship internationally?

Yes we do post internationally. Once we have our online shop functioning this process will be very simple. Until then, we can discuss cost and process with you. We know of many of our women's necklaces and children's collection that have been sent overseas as gifts - apparently our jewellery, like us, likes to travel.

    3. What is the price range of your jewellery?

We have worked very hard to ensure that our jewellery is priced in a way that allows you to buy a high quality treat for yourself, friends or children without guilt.

To give you a rough idea:

    • Women's necklaces - range from $20 to $55
    • Women's earrings - $18
    • Women's bangles - range from $12 to $25
    • Women's brooches - range from $25 to $40
    • Children's bright ranges - range from $8 to $16
    • Children's felt - $25

    4. When will you be in Canberra?

We visit Canberra every quarter for the Canberra Handmade Market. The next market will be on Saturday 11 September.

    5. Will Six in a Row come to Wollongong?

Never say never, but we don't currently have plans to bring Six to Wollongong. We will keep you posted if this changes and thank you for the interest.

  • Welcome to Six in a Row in About Six, All Blog Posts
    21 Jun 2010  | 11 Comments

Welcome to our Six in a Row blog.

As this is our first entry, it makes sense to give you some information about Six in Row and what we are about.

We (Emma and Susannah) have known each other since we were 12. We later bonded over the solace the school art room provided us. Both of us are products of creative families that have given us the legacy of wanting to make, create and surround ourselves with beautiful and interesting things.

With the arrival of each of our youngest children, we were both looking for something creative that would provide us with an outlet, drawing on our frustrated "inner artists" but also using the corporate skills we had collected over the years.

Six in a Row has given life to this idea.

We are both wearers of accessories, updating an outfit or our jeans and t-shirt uniform with beads, so that we felt a little bit lovelier. And really, from that concept we have developed our own range of beautiful wooden and resin jewellery.

With each piece we make (and we actually make each piece by hand ourselves) we ask ourselves "is this lovely" or we picture a friend and make something we think would suit them. Although we watch fashion and trends, we are not looking to create cutting edge fashion statements. Instead we want to create beautiful, wearable and timeless jewellery for women and children - things you can add to your wardrobe and hopefully feel a little bit lovelier too.

We hope you enjoy our blog and our website (www.sixinarow.com.au).

  • Canberra Handmade Market - June in Markets and Events, All Blog Posts
    20 Jun 2010

We were recently in Canberra for the Canberra Handmade Market - www.handmademarket.com.au . This was our second trip to the Nation's Capital for this market and again we had a great day.

Canberra Handmade is a market for craftspeople who create their wares themselves (ie no imports). As a result, you find lots of beautiful handmade products with the crafts people who made them manning their stalls. The overall feel of the market is positive and warm, even on a chilly Canberra morning. We love the stall holders around us and we love the spirit of the people who come to shop at Handmade.

Looking forward to the next Canberra Handmade in September.
